Truck wheel alignment and axle correction, Thomastown
Steer axle alignment and drive axle correction for rigid trucks and prime movers at Trawalla Ave, Thomastown. We measure before we adjust, so a bent or shifted axle is corrected instead of hidden behind a new set of steer tyres.
Mon to Fri 6am to 6pm, Sat 6am to 3pm
IBM Auto Mechanic does truck wheel alignment and axle correction for rigid trucks and prime movers at 21-23 Trawalla Ave, Thomastown. Alignment sets the steer axle so the truck tracks true; axle correction fixes a drive or steer axle that is bent, shifted or out of square with the chassis, which no amount of alignment can hide. Both are done on our own floor rather than sent out.
Alignment or axle correction: which one do you need?
| Symptom | Usually means |
|---|---|
| Steering wheel off-centre on a straight road | Steer axle alignment |
| Truck pulls to one side | Alignment, or a shifted drive axle |
| Feathered or one-sided wear on steer tyres | Alignment |
| Uneven wear on drive tyres, truck dog-tracks | Drive axle out of square: axle correction |
| New steer tyres wearing early after a suspension or steering repair | Alignment check was skipped |
| Tyre wear after hitting a kerb, pothole or having an accident | Bent axle or shifted axle: axle correction |
We measure before we adjust. If the drive axle is out of square, aligning the steer axle alone will not stop the tyre wear, and we will tell you that rather than do the job twice.
What the alignment includes
- Toe, camber and caster on the steer axle
- Drive axle thrust angle and offset relative to the chassis
- Check of tie-rod ends, drag link, kingpins and wheel bearings, because worn parts make an alignment meaningless
- Tyre pressures and a wear pattern read before and after
Axle correction
Axle correction brings a bent or shifted axle back to specification so the wheels sit square to the chassis. It is the fix for trucks that dog-track, scrub drive tyres or pull after an impact. Ring with what happened to the truck and how it is wearing tyres and we will tell you whether correction is likely before you bring it in.
When to book an alignment
- With every new set of steer tyres
- After any steering or suspension repair
- After a kerb strike, pothole hit or accident
- At the roadworthy, if the tyres show uneven wear
An alignment is cheap compared with a set of steer tyres. Trailers are aligned as well: see trailer alignment and axle correction.
Price and turnaround
Ask for the price when you book. Most alignments are done the same day; axle correction depends on what is bent and is quoted after measuring.

Questions we get asked
What is the difference between wheel alignment and axle correction?
Wheel alignment adjusts toe, camber and caster at the steer axle so the wheels track true. Axle correction fixes a drive or steer axle that is bent, shifted or out of square with the chassis, which alignment alone cannot correct. Uneven or feathered wear on the drive tyres usually points to an axle problem.
How do I know my truck needs an alignment?
The usual signs are the steering wheel off-centre on a straight road, the truck pulling to one side, feathered or one-sided steer tyre wear, and a new set of steer tyres wearing early. An alignment check after fitting new steer tyres or after any steering or suspension repair is cheap compared with the tyres.
Can you align the trailer as well as the prime mover?
Yes. Trailer alignment and axle correction are done at the same workshop for semi, dog and tag trailers. A trailer that scrubs tyres or dog-tracks behind the truck is corrected at the trailer axles, not at the prime mover.
How long does a truck alignment take?
Most alignments are done the same day. Axle correction depends on what is bent and is quoted after measuring, with a turnaround time given at the same time.
