Caravan roadworthy certificate (caravan RWC), Thomastown
Caravan and camper trailer roadworthy inspections at our Thomastown workshop: coupling, brakes, bearings, tyres, lights and chassis. Small fixes done on the spot so you leave with the certificate.
Mon to Fri 6am to 6pm, Sat 6am to 3pm
IBM Auto Mechanic inspects caravans and camper trailers for a Victorian Certificate of Roadworthiness at 21-23 Trawalla Ave, Thomastown. The inspection covers the coupling and safety chains, brakes, wheel bearings, tyres, lights and plug wiring, and the chassis. Pass, and our licensed vehicle tester issues the certificate on the spot. Fail, and you leave with a written report and a booked re-check.
When a caravan needs an RWC
- Selling or transferring a registered caravan in Victoria
- Re-registering a caravan that has lapsed, or bringing one in from interstate
- Clearing a defect notice
Some light trailers are exempt from the roadworthy requirement on transfer. Ring with the caravan’s ATM and we will tell you whether yours needs a certificate before you tow it over.
What the caravan inspection covers
- Coupling, safety chains, shackles and the handbrake
- Brakes: override or electric, including the breakaway unit where fitted
- Wheel bearings, hubs and stub axles
- Tyres, rims and wheel nuts
- Tail lights, indicators, reflectors and the trailer plug wiring
- Chassis, drawbar, welds and suspension
- Jockey wheel and stabiliser legs
Gas and electrical compliance certificates are separate documents from a roadworthy certificate. If a buyer or dealer has asked for those as well, tell us when you book and we will point you in the right direction.
What fails caravans most often
- Tyres aged past their safe life, even with plenty of tread
- Wheel bearings with play or no grease
- Trailer plug wiring and lights
- Seized or ineffective brakes on vans that have sat unused
- Coupling wear and missing or undersized safety chain shackles
What to bring
- Registration details, or the VIN and papers for an unregistered or interstate van
- Any previous rejection report
- The van empty of gas bottles if you can; it makes the coupling and drawbar easier to inspect

Questions we get asked
Does my caravan need a roadworthy certificate to sell it?
Registered caravans generally need a roadworthy certificate when sold or transferred in Victoria, with exemptions for some light trailers. Ring with the caravan's ATM and we will tell you whether yours needs a certificate before you tow it over.
Does the caravan RWC cover gas and electrical?
No. Gas and electrical compliance certificates are separate documents from a roadworthy certificate. The roadworthy covers the coupling, chains, brakes, bearings, tyres, lights, plug wiring and chassis. If a buyer has asked for gas or electrical certificates as well, tell us when you book.
What fails caravans most often?
Tyres aged past their safe life even with tread left, wheel bearings with play or no grease, trailer plug wiring and lights, brakes that have seized on vans left standing, and worn couplings or undersized safety chain shackles. Most are fixed on the spot.
How long does a caravan inspection take?
Most caravan inspections are done within the day. Book a morning slot if you want small fixes such as bearings, globes or a trailer plug done at the same visit so you leave with the certificate.
