Trailer roadworthy certificate (trailer RWC) at IBM Auto Mechanic, Thomastown

IBM Auto Mechanic inspects semi trailers, dog trailers, tag trailers and other heavy trailers for a Victorian Certificate of Roadworthiness at 21-23 Trawalla Ave, Thomastown. The inspection covers the drawbar or kingpin and coupling, landing legs, air lines and brake chambers, ABS or EBS connectors, suspension, lights, tyres and chassis. If the trailer passes, our licensed vehicle tester issues the certificate on the spot. If it fails, you leave with a written report and a booked re-check.

When a heavy trailer needs an RWC

  • Selling or transferring a registered trailer
  • Re-registering a trailer that has lapsed, or bringing one in from interstate
  • Clearing a defect notice
  • Fleet and lease checks that ask for a current certificate

Some light trailers are exempt from the roadworthy requirement on transfer in Victoria. If you are not sure whether yours needs one, ring with the trailer type and ATM and we will tell you.

What the trailer inspection covers

  • Kingpin or drawbar, coupling, safety chains and towing eye
  • Landing legs and their mounts
  • Air lines, glad hands, brake chambers, slack adjusters and brake linings
  • ABS or EBS connectors and warning function
  • Suspension, airbags, hangers and bushes
  • Lights, reflectors, marker lights and wiring
  • Tyres, rims and wheel nuts
  • Chassis rails, cross-members, welds and load restraint points
  • Body, gates, doors and curtain fittings

What fails trailers most often

  • Air leaks at glad hands, hoses and chamber diaphragms
  • Brake linings below minimum and adjusters out
  • Damaged ABS connectors and light wiring
  • Tyre wear from axle misalignment, which is worth fixing at the same visit (see trailer alignment and axle correction)
  • Cracked drawbar or cross-member welds, which we can repair on site

What to bring

  • Registration details, or the VIN and papers for an unregistered or interstate trailer
  • Any previous rejection report or defect notice
  • If it is a semi trailer, bring it on a prime mover or arrange delivery; ring first if you need to drop a trailer and leave it

If the trailer fails

The report lists each failed item. Have the repairs done here or elsewhere, and bring the trailer back to the same tester inside the seven-day re-test window so only the failed items are re-inspected. After that a full new inspection is required.

Price and turnaround

Ask for the price when you book. Trailers dropped in the morning are usually inspected, repaired where parts are on hand, and re-checked the same day. Fleets with several trailers get one booking contact.

Near you: the workshop is in Thomastown, a short drive from Epping, Lalor, Campbellfield, Somerton, Broadmeadows, Coolaroo, Craigieburn and the rest of northern Melbourne. Areas we serve.

Questions we get asked

Do heavy trailers need a roadworthy certificate in Victoria?

Registered heavy trailers generally need a roadworthy certificate when they are sold or transferred, re-registered after a lapse, or brought in from interstate. Some light trailers are exempt on transfer. Ring with the trailer type and ATM and we will tell you whether yours needs one.

What fails heavy trailers most often?

Air leaks at glad hands, hoses and brake chamber diaphragms, brake linings below minimum, damaged ABS connectors and light wiring, tyres worn by axle misalignment, and cracked drawbar or cross-member welds. All of those are repaired at Trawalla Ave.

Can I drop a semi trailer and leave it?

Usually yes. Ring first so we can allocate space and a time, then bring it on a prime mover or arrange delivery. We inspect, repair where parts are on hand, and re-check, then ring you to collect.

How long is a trailer RWC valid?

A Victorian roadworthy certificate is valid for 30 days from the date it is issued, for trailers as for trucks and cars. Book the inspection close to the transfer date so the certificate is still current when the paperwork is lodged.
